What is a phone QR code?

A phone QR code encodes a tel: link so scanning opens the dialer with your number ready. That is useful on shop windows, vehicle magnets, service vans, event badges, and printed directories when you want a call — not a website visit. Unlike a URL code, there is no intermediate page: the phone starts a call flow immediately after the user confirms.

Use the international format with a country code (for example +1 or +90) so travelers and roaming guests can dial correctly. Avoid spaces and letters in the payload; keep punctuation minimal. If you also want texting, create a separate SMS QR instead of overloading the phone code.

maintool builds the image in your browser. The number you type is not uploaded to maintool servers for generation. Download PNG for screens, SVG or PDF when you need sharp edges for large print. Always test the dial prompt on both iPhone and Android before you laminate signs.

How to create a phone QR code

  1. Enter your phone number with country code (digits only).
  2. Generate and preview the code on screen.
  3. Download PNG for screens, SVG for design tools, or PDF for printing.
  4. Test with iPhone and Android before printing large batches.

Tips for phone QR codes

Print dark modules on a light background with at least about 2x2 cm at arm's length. Place the code next to a short line such as Scan to call us so people know what will happen. Do not cover the quiet zone with stickers or heavy branding.

If your number changes, the printed code cannot update itself — regenerate and reprint. For campaigns that must stay editable, pair a short URL you control with the URL generator instead. See the print size guide before ordering bulk stickers.

When a phone QR beats a website QR

Choose phone QR when the primary action is a conversation: locksmiths, clinics booking lines, on-call support, roadside assistance, and pop-up vendors. Choose a website or WhatsApp code when you need menus, forms, chat history, or richer context before the customer decides to call.

Many businesses print both: a menu or Maps URL for browsing, plus a phone QR for urgent help. Keep each code large enough to scan from the distance people actually stand — window glass often needs a bigger mark than a counter card.
